Terms & Definitions
Caucus - a meeting of party members within a legislative body to select leaders and determine strategy.
Assembly - a group of persons gathered together, usually for a particular purpose, whether religious, political, educational, or social.
Primary - also called primary election. a preliminary election in which voters of each party nominate candidates for office, party officers, choosing delegates for a convention, etc.
General Election - a regularly scheduled local, state, or national election in which voters elect officeholders. Usually a state or national election, as opposed to a local election.
Straw Poll - an unofficial vote taken to obtain an indication of the general trend of opinion on a particular issue.
Opinion Poll - survey of opinions from a particular sample. Usually designed to represent the opinions of a population by asking a representative sample size number of people a series of questions and then extrapolating the answers to the larger group within an acceptable margin of error.
Precinct - also called election district. One of a fixed number of districts, each containing one polling place, into which a city, town, etc., is divided for voting purposes.
